An infrastructure milestone is on the horizon for Ginninderry, with the formal approval of the Parkwood Road Connection project marking a new chapter in the community’s development. 

This crucial transport link, connecting Pro Hart Avenue to Parkwood Rd and through to Kippax, promises to reshape how residents and visitors access our growing ACT community.

The Parkwood Road Connection is a comprehensive infrastructure solution designed to address the evolving needs of Ginninderry. Once completed by early-2027, this new arterial road will serve as the community’s second major entry and exit point, significantly reducing pressure on existing access routes and improving traffic distribution. 

The project encompasses approximately 800 metres of new arterial road construction, strategically positioned to optimise traffic flow while maintaining the area’s commitment to sustainable transport options. Safety has been paramount in the design process, with the new connection engineered to handle increased traffic volumes while providing clear sightlines and appropriate intersection controls.

A focus on sustainable transport 

The Parkwood Road Connection will feature dedicated shared paths running alongside the new road, creating safe corridors for pedestrians and cyclists. Perhaps most significantly, the project includes the establishment of an active travel link connecting Pro Hart Avenue to O’Reilly Street, forming a comprehensive network that encourages residents to choose walking and cycling over car travel. 

This active travel infrastructure reflects broader urban planning principles that prioritise community health, environmental sustainability, and quality of life. The dedicated pathways will integrate seamlessly with Ginninderry’s existing trail network, creating interconnected routes that make car-free travel a viable and attractive option. 

The road connection forms part of the broader off-site infrastructure works supporting the Macnamara Estate Development Plan 2, ensuring that essential services and access routes are in place for further residential development.

The project includes the installation of a trunk water main that will provide critical water supply services to the developing Macnamara suburb. This water infrastructure extends along the new road alignment and continues to O’Reilly Street in Macgregor, creating a robust supply network that can support future population growth in the region.

Major intersections and traffic management 

Three strategically designed major intersections will be constructed as part of this project, each carefully planned to optimise traffic flow and accessibility across key routes. These intersections represent critical nodes in the broader transport network, designed to handle both current traffic volumes and anticipated future growth.

The intersection design process has considered multiple factors, including peak traffic flows, pedestrian and cyclist movements, public transport accessibility, and emergency vehicle access. 

Timeline and community impact 

With completion expected by early-2027, the Parkwood Road Connection project represents a significant investment in Ginninderry’s infrastructure. During the construction phase, nearby residents can expect some temporary disruptions.
