More than a meal: Ginninderry’s fifth annual Iftar brings community together

In what has become a cherished tradition, Ginninderry hosted its fifth annual community Iftar last Sunday at The Link, bringing together over 200 residents and guests.

For those unfamiliar, Iftar is the evening meal with which Muslims end their daily fast during the holy month of Ramadan. But at Ginninderry, it has evolved into something greater, a celebration that welcomes people of all faiths, nationalities, and backgrounds to learn, share, and connect.

The event marked the largest Iftar celebration yet for Ginninderry, surpassing even last year’s impressive gathering. Working alongside our steadfast partners — Helping ACT and Kippax Uniting Church — we created a space where breaking bread truly meant breaking barriers.

Distinguished attendees included Her Excellency the Honourable Ms Sam Mostyn AC Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia and His Excellency Mr Simeon Beckett SC, the Honourable Dr Andrew Leigh MP as representative of the Prime Minister, Brother Hamza from United Muslims Canberra, Shane Rattenbury MLA, Jo Clay MLA and Hands Across Canberra CEO Genevieve Jacobs, reflecting the significance of the occasion.

Attendees enjoyed a feast of zucchini balls, lentil soup, fragrant curries, fresh pide, colorful salads, and succulent kebabs. Children played together while adults exchanged stories, and phone numbers for future coffee dates.

Mohammed Ali, Chair of HelpingACT, spoke warmly about how the Iftar experience has evolved over the years: “When we started in 2021, this was a new concept for many. Now in 2025, we see familiar faces returning and bringing friends.

“Ramadan’s blessings are meant to be shared with all humanity, and tonight shows how food and friendship can transcend any differences.”

As our community has learned, there’s nothing quite like sharing a meal to bring people together.
