There’s more to growing vegetables in your backyard than just saving on your grocery bill at the supermarket.

It connects you to the earth in a way that makes you understand the vital role of conservation, according to Canberra Environment Centre Executive Director Fiona Veikkanen.

In this episode of Ginninderry’s Inspire podcast, host and Head of Sustainability and Community Development Jessica Stewart sits down with Fiona to find both how simple it is to reduce your carbon footprint by shopping and eating more mindfully, as well as steps everyone can take to harness the power of compost!

Fiona is an enthusiast for many practical, small steps we can take to create a more sustainable future. And it can all start with planting a single herb or veggie in the backyard.

Watching a plant grow tends to improve people’s understanding of how many resources go into food production, including sun, soil and water. It usually leads to more mindful consumption and less waste. It also leads us to better recognise that fruit and vegetables come in all shapes and sizes, not just the homogenous standards that are on display in shops.

Plus, it simply tastes better when you grow it at home.

Fiona is leading the charge through her work at Canberra Environment Centre where the ethos of reusing, recycling, and repurposing is backed up by workshops and programs aimed at showing us a better way forward.

It’s amazing to understand the mind-blowing magic of compost once Fiona explains what’s actually in it and how it works.
