Your Ginninderry guide to summer holiday fun
Those six weeks of summer holidays can feel endless when you’re trying to keep kids entertained, prevent them from melting into the couch, and maintain some semblance of your sanity.
The good news? Living in Ginninderry means you’ve got brilliant options right on your doorstep that won’t require a second mortgage or hours in the car. We’ve rounded up our favourite local activities that actually work – tried, tested, and kid-approved by Ginninderry families who’ve been there, done that, and lived to tell the tale.
Nature play without the drive
Conservation Corridor Walks
The southern walking track along the Conservation Corridor remains one of the best free entertainment options in Ginninderry. Start at The Link and make your way to Shepherds Lookout – the views are spectacular, and you’ll likely spot kangaroos, kookaburras, and all sorts of native wildlife along the way.
Summer mornings are perfect for these walks; get out early while it’s still cool, and you’ll be home before the heat really kicks in. Pack a small backpack with water, hats, and perhaps some morning tea to enjoy at the lookout.
The Ginninderry adds an extra element with guided audio tracks and key information about some areas of the trails. Available to download on Apple and Android.
The Link: Your everyday escape
When you need fresh air but don’t have time for a longer expedition, The Link in Strathnairn is your answer. The toddlers’ play space keeps little ones happy, whilst the kids’ cubby inspires imaginative play. The pond area is fascinating for children who love observing nature, and there’s plenty of open grass for running around or kicking a ball.
On those inevitable scorching days when even the shade feels too hot, duck inside to explore the small library or check out the current art exhibition. It’s climate-controlled comfort with a side of culture!
Water Play at Strathnairn Nature Park
The water pump at Strathnairn Nature Park provides simple, refreshing fun for little ones. Kids can pump, splash, and play whilst parents relax, or join in the fun. It’s the perfect low-key activity when the temperature soars.
Paddys Park: The community hub
Since opening in 2020, Paddys Park has become the go-to spot for Ginninderry families. The basketball courts see constant action (early morning games before it gets too hot are popular), whilst the playground equipment works for various ages and abilities.
The open-air amphitheatre hosts events throughout summer – keep an eye on our What’s On page for family-friendly performances and movie nights. There’s something magical about outdoor cinema on a warm summer evening with the whole community gathered together.
Summer tip: Bring a picnic dinner and arrive early for evening events. The kids can play while you set up, and you’ll snag the best spot for the show.
Four-legged fun
Don’t forget your furry family member! The temporary dog park on Speldewinde Street provides entertainment for both kids and dogs. Watching the dogs play often keeps children amused for ages, and your pooch will appreciate the exercise too.
For longer adventures, Umbagong District Park offers walking trails suitable for families with dogs. Go early in the morning or later in the evening during summer to avoid the worst heat.
Pedal power: e-bike adventures
The free e-bikes at The Link (available for two hours) are brilliant for summer exploration – especially during cooler parts of the day. The electric assistance means you can cover more ground without anyone complaining about tired legs, and kids love the novelty of the bikes.
Plan routes that include shade where possible, and always carry more water than you think you’ll need. The Ginninderry Conservation Corridor paths are perfect for e-bike adventures, offering scenic routes with plenty of interesting spots to stop and explore.
Indoor escapes for scorching days
Strathnairn Arts
When it’s genuinely too hot to be outside (and there will be days like that), Strathnairn Arts offers a cool, creative escape. The studios often run holiday workshops for kids – check their website for the summer program. Even without a workshop, wandering through the galleries and watching artists at work provides free entertainment and cultural enrichment.
Belconnen Arts Centre
A short drive away, Belconnen Arts Centre frequently hosts holiday programs, exhibitions, and performances suitable for families. Their air-conditioned spaces provide welcome relief from the heat, and there’s usually something interesting to see or do.
Refuelling hungry troops
Café Stepping Stone
When hunger strikes (approximately every 47 minutes during school holidays), Café Stepping Stone at Strathnairn Arts has you covered. Their kids’ menu is both affordable and appealing to children – the cheese toasties and hummus with carrot sticks are perennial favourites.
The café understands families, with toys in the corner for entertainment while you wait, plenty of space for kids who can’t sit still, and those adorable babycinos with tiny marshmallows that make little ones feel very grown up.
Summer bonus: The outdoor seating area is lovely for breakfast or early lunch before the day heats up properly.
Beat the heat: water-based adventures
Splash around at local pools
When the mercury rises, you’ll want to know where the nearest water is. Belconnen Leisure Centre is just a short drive away and offers indoor and outdoor pools perfect for all ages. The kids’ splash area keeps little ones entertained for hours, whilst the bigger pools let older kids burn off that seemingly endless summer energy.
The Gungahlin Leisure Centre is another fantastic option, with its zero-depth entry pool that’s perfect for toddlers and nervous swimmers. Pack the goggles, grab some snacks, and prepare for a few blissful hours of water play.
Early morning or late afternoon swims
Pro tip from seasoned local parents: aim for early morning sessions (when the pools open) or late afternoon swims. You’ll avoid the midday heat and the peak crowds, plus tired kids sleep brilliantly after a good swim!
