From new arrival to full-time employee: Yao’s SPARK Journey
Three months. That’s how long it took Yao to go from completing the Ginninderry SPARK Training & Employment Program to starting full-time employment.
But the real story isn’t the timeline – it’s what Yao brought back to thank the team: a traditional Chinese 锦旗 (jǐnqí) banner, and words that describe why this program is so beneficial for its participants.
Yao completed the Ginninderry SPARK Construction Taster Program for Migrants and Refugees in September, 2025. Within months, he progressed from participant to work experience at Ram Construction to full-time employee – a trajectory that speaks volumes about both his determination and the program’s effectiveness.
In Chinese culture, when someone truly helps you, there’s a traditional way to express that gratitude: a banner called 锦旗 (jǐnqí).
As Yao explains, “It means respect, appreciation, and honour. A lot of people hang it up at work to remember the difference they made in someone’s life.”
“When I arrived here – new country, new start, English a bit shaky – you legends didn’t just train me, you supported me, guided me, and gave me the confidence to move forward.” says Yao.
Yao arrived facing universal migrant challenges: language barriers, unfamiliar systems, uncertainty about opportunities. SPARK provided a structured pathway through that uncertainty, with the human support that made success possible. His progression from September completion to full-time employment by year’s end represents exactly what the program aims for – genuine employment success, not just course completion.
As Yao begins his career with Ram Construction, his success reinforces the SPARK model: combine quality training with authentic support, connect participants with employers through work experience, and create pathways to genuine employment.
The Ginninderry SPARK Program continues to accept participants. For more information, check out our website.
