Kids’ paradise found: your local guide to family fun in Ginninderry
Looking for ways to keep the little ones entertained without travelling miles from home? We’ve got you covered with these tried-and-tested local favourites.
Let’s face it – finding activities that keep the kids happy, don’t break the bank, and actually give you a chance to enjoy yourself too can feel like searching for a unicorn. But here in Ginninderry, we’re pretty spoiled for choice when it comes to family-friendly adventures right on our doorstep.
We’re excited to share our favourite local spots that have saved many a weekend from the dreaded “I’m bored” chorus.
Reconnect with nature (without the long drive)
Walking tracks along the Conservation Corridor
Have you discovered our local bushwalking treasures yet? While some of the Conservation Corridor is still transitioning from farmland to protected habitat, the southern track is absolutely worth exploring with the kids.
Start at The Link and make your way to Shepherd’s Lookout – the views are spectacular, and chances are you’ll spot some kangaroos and kookaburras along the way. Find out more about the tracks here.
Top tip: Pack a small magnifying glass for the little ones to examine interesting bugs and plants along the track. It turns walks into proper scientific expeditions!
The Link: Your Everyday Nature Fix
Don’t have time for a longer adventure? The Link in Strathnairn is a go-to for impromptu outdoor time. Located in Strathnairn, just off the main road, it’s easy to stop in for some fresh air and running-around time. With a toddlers play space, a kids cubby, pond surrounded by interesting sounds and sights, and plenty of grass for free play or kicking a ball, it’s a great place to stop-in for families.
We’ve found the Nature Play Canberra app brilliant for adding extra excitement to our outdoor adventures. The kids can tick off challenges and earn ‘badges’ – suddenly, identifying five native plants or building a nature cubby becomes a thrilling mission!
Even on a rainy day it’s worth a visit, with a small library and art gallery showcasing exhibitions from a range of local artists.
Local hangouts worth writing home about
Paddys Park: Something for everyone
Since opening in 2020, Paddys Park has become a hub for local kids. They can shoot hoops on the basketball courts, tire themselves out on the play equipment, or practice their cricket while you sip on a coffee.
The open-air amphitheatre has hosted some brilliant family-friendly performances too. You can keep an eye on all events happening across Ginninderry through our What’s On page.
For four-legged family members
Got a furry friend who needs to burn off energy, too? The temporary dog park on Speldewinde Street is the perfect place for you, your kids and your pooch. Watching the dogs play might entertain the kids even more than the playground equipment!
If you’re after a longer walk, head to Umbagong District Park with the dog and kids.
Experience Ginninderry’s E-Bike adventure
Have you tried the e-bikes yet? Located at The Link, they’re free for two hours – perfect for exploring the local area without worrying about tired little legs on the way back.
Remember: Bring hats and water bottles – even with electric assistance, you’ll work up a thirst exploring the beautiful surroundings!
Refuel like a local
When hunger strikes (as it inevitably does approximately 47 times a day with kids), Café Stepping Stone is the place to be. Beyond the delicious coffee that keeps parents functioning, they’ve put real thought into their kids’ menu.
Your little ones will love the cheese toasties and hummus with carrot sticks. Starting at just $5, it’s refreshingly affordable too. The toys in the corner have saved many a meltdown while waiting for food, and there’s plenty of space for little bodies that can’t sit still.
Staff tip: Ask for their babycinos – they come with the cutest tiny marshmallows.
