Wombat Rescue and Prague Zoo Unite for Conservation Milestone at Ginninderry

A new chapter in wildlife conservation has begun with the official opening of Ginninderry’s first wombat enclosure.

The project is an exciting collaboration between Wombat Rescue, the Ginninderry Conservation Trust, and the Prague Zoo, with the First Lady of the Czech Republic, Mrs. Eva Pavlová, attending on behalf of His Excellency Mr. Petr Pavel, President of the Czech Republic and the Prague Zoo for the official opening.

The 15-metre by 15-metre enclosure is the culmination of years of dedicated conservation by Wombat Rescue, the only wildlife group in the capital region focused solely on the protection and rehabilitation of the Bare Nosed Wombat. The organisation has played a vital role in mapping the population of wombats across the Ginninderry Conservation Corridor, identifying between 5–40 wombats and over 100 burrows in the area.

The group’s efforts have been supported by the Ginninderry Conservation Trust, which protects the cultural and environmental values of the ultimate 596-hectare corridor that connects Ginninderry with the Murrumbidgee River.

Dr. Jason Cummings, CEO of the Ginninderry Conservation Trust, says the enclosure is a significant milestone for the Canberra region.

“This project is a testament to what can be achieved when local expertise, international collaboration, and community stewardship come together.” Dr Cummings says.

“It not only highlights the importance of the Ginninderry Conservation Corridor but also strengthens our commitment to the protection, enhancement and appreciation of the cultural and environmental values of the area.”

Wombats are just one of the many native wildlife in the Ginninderry Conservation Corridor, along with unique birds, lizards and marsupials.
