Belconnen Magpies soar with support from Ginninderry Grants and Sponsorship Program
Ginninderry prides itself on bringing innovative ideas to life. The annual Community Grants and Sponsorship Program allows local organisations to bring these ideas to life, fostering community development and neighbourhoods throughout the region.
The Belconnen Magpies Football Club received $5,000 through the program, allowing them to foster AFL participation across all ages and abilities.
The Belconnen Magpies serve as a vital community institution supporting approximately 800 junior players annually while maintaining a strong senior program and engaging over 5,000 social members. The club operates the only girls-only Auskick program in the ACT region, demonstrating their commitment to inclusive sporting opportunities.
The sponsorship support from Ginninderry has helped the Magpies continue their tradition of sporting excellence. In 2023, their junior clubs won five of nine grand finals in the region. The club’s development pathway has produced remarkable results, with six former players reaching the AFL/AFLW level in 2023, including Jack Steele as Captain of St Kilda. Currently, over 50 junior players represent the GWS Academy.
The $5,000 sponsorship grant directly addresses the financial challenges of fielding multiple teams. These funds help cover essential costs including affiliation fees, equipment, uniforms, and ground hire, complementing the extensive volunteer effort that has sustained the club for over 50 years.
As Ginninderry continues to grow, this ongoing partnership with community institutions like the Belconnen Magpies will remain essential to creating a vibrant, active, and connected community. Through this partnership, both organisations are helping to build not just houses and sporting teams, but a stronger, more connected community with opportunities for everyone.
