The Canberra Symphony Orchestra (CSO) just launched their new Music in MY School program at schools across the Capital Region, providing inspiring and meaningful classical music experiences to school students and their teachers.

The CSO’s Education Giving Circle has funded a review of existing CSO programs and engaged the support of music education specialist Dr Anita Collins to develop a meaningful, accessible, and curriculum-aligned program that addressed the current needs of teachers, parents, and students.

“Music education grows, hones and permanently improves neural networks like no other activity.” Dr Anita Collins, Assistant Professor of Music Education, University of Canberra.

Music in MY School is a unique music education program that goes beyond the traditional model of specialising music education and instead brings it into the main classroom as a way to enhance learning and to encourage all teachers to embrace music as a companion in the classroom.

The program was initially made possible through support from lead partners Ginninderry and Riverview Developments to sponsor Kingsford Smith School and Mt Carmel in Yass. Icon Water followed with sponsorship of the program in the Queanbeyan Palerang region.  These key sponsors have made it possible for the schools to participate in the program at no cost.

Ginninderry and Riverview Developments have been working closely with the CSO on the development of the program so that it supports a shared goal of building strong resilient communities.

“We’ve looked closely at the research and are confident that this investment in early childhood music education will reap rewards for children, their families and the wider community.” Susan Davis, Community and Cultural Planning Manager, Ginninderry.

A pre-concert information session was held at 10:30 am on Wednesday 30 May 2018 at Macquarie Primary School, kicking off a week of live performances in the four schools.
