On 20 April 2017, current participants of the Yass Construction Program gathered at Zac’s Place on Pritchett Street to cook a BBQ for their potential work experience employers.

The group, currently half way through completing their Certificate II in construction, has been working on upgrading the community garden facilities at Zac’s place since 14 March 2017.

Over the course of the program participants pour a new concrete driveway, paths for disability access to the gardens and community hall, and construct seven new garden beds, a new composting bin and paved area underneath a shade shelter. During the 12-week program, participants are also sent out on work experience placements with local employers from the community.

The idea to bring potential employers and construction program participants together over a BBQ at Zac’s Place was borne out of a desire to facilitate a meet and greet in a relaxed environment, while showcasing the wonderful works that have been completed by participants at the community garden.

Attending the BBQ were a wide range of individuals, from employers to earth works and council members. It was a fantastic day filled with many opportunities for participants to talk to employers from many different industry sectors. It was also an opportunity for the participants to work together in cooking food that was served.
